Newcastle United were understood to be interested in Jonathan David earlier this year.
Lille striker Jonathan David is reportedly set to join Juventus on a free transfer amid interest from Newcastle United.
NewcastleWorld reported in January that Toon scouts had watched the Canadian international. David has emerged as one of Europe’s top strikers in recent years and was once tipped as a £50million target for Manchester United.
The 25-year-old has netted 109 goals since joining Lille from Gent in 2020. He made no secret of his desire to seek a new challenge throughout last season.
Jonathan David already outlined future
“Obviously, I’d like to have something done before the start of pre-season,” David told The Athletic. “To prepare myself as best as possible with my new team. I want a club with ambition. Obviously, I want to fight to win titles. A competitive team with ambition and a good sporting project.
“When I look at Serie A compared to, for example, the Premier League, the latter has a faster pace. Serie A is more tactical. It’s like a game of chess, in a way.”
Fabrizio Romano confirms Juventus move
Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano has insisted Juve are now set to sign the striker. He wrote on social media: “Jonathan David to Juventus, here we go! Verbal agreement reached overnight on every detail with the Canadian striker.
“Long-term deal agreed and Jonathan David’s set to travel for medical tests, formal steps to follow. Contracts to be checked and signed soon.”

Newcastle United striker hunt
Alexander Isak is the undisputed first-choice striker at St James’ Park. Toon chiefs forked out a club-record £63million for the Swede in 2022 and the move has paid dividends.
An impressive 62 goals in 109 games has seen Isak compared to some of the world’s best strikers - with Newcastle valuing him beyond £150million. Isak’s dominance on Tyneside is understood to be a key reason why a deal for David - who wants first-team football - never looked likely.
The Magpies are hopeful of signing a forward to cover Isak, with Callum Wilson’s future remaining in limbo. Wilson’s contract expired on Monday as he contemplates a reduced, incentivised deal.
Will Osula is waiting on the wings and impressed at the recent under-21s Euros. However, an extra body who can play multiple positions - like recent target Joao Pedro - would add depth to Newcastle’s ranks.
