There’s yet another fresh face at Liverpool — and this one comes with a Champions League medal and a thunderbolt of a left foot.
Liverpool have confirmed (via their official website) the arrival of Giovanni van Bronckhorst as part of Arne Slot’s new-look backroom team.
The former Dutch international joins the Reds as an assistant coach ahead of the 2025/26 season. His appointment follows the exit of John Heitinga, who recently took over as Ajax head coach.
Van Bronckhorst isn’t your average assistant. With experience managing top clubs like Rangers and Feyenoord — where he ended an 18-year title drought — he adds serious weight to Liverpool’s coaching bench.
You might remember him for that rocket against Uruguay in the 2010 World Cup, but this move is more about strategy than screamers.
While Sipke Hulshoff remains Slot’s main right-hand man, Van Bronckhorst will play a key role during training and matchdays.
His job will focus on working directly with players — using his playing experience and tactical know-how to help the Reds stay sharp and stay winning.

Who is Giovanni van Bronckhorst? The new Liverpool joinee
Van Bronckhorst brings both class and character to Merseyside. A product of Feyenoord’s academy, he enjoyed a rich playing career that saw him shine for Rangers, Arsenal, and Barcelona — where he won the Champions League in 2006.
He stepped into coaching soon after retirement, taking charge at Feyenoord and winning the Eredivisie in 2016/17.
He later managed Rangers, even leading them to the Europa League final in 2022. More recently, he’s had spells in China and Turkey — but now it’s the Premier League calling.
His addition reflects Slot’s desire for a strong, experienced staff as Liverpool aims to build on their recent success. With pre-season kicking off on July 8, the Dutchman joins at just the right time.
