Wataru Endo is here to stay, but what's next for him?

Since arriving from Stuttgart in 2023, midfielder Wataru Endo has increased his value to Liverpool.

Known as a versatile player capable of performing various roles from midfield to defense, Endo’s contributions have come to symbolize victory for Kopites in recent years.

Despite limited playing time under Arne Slot and several significant squad additions this offseason, the beloved Japanese international has made one thing clear: he’s here to stay and win more trophies for Liverpool.

Speaking on the Red Machine podcast, the No. 3 explained that lifting the Premier League and Carabao Cup in successive seasons “is just the beginning.”

"I love Liverpool Football Club,” he said. "It means a lot to me but I still feel like we can achieve something more with the staff and the team and for the fans."

The statement reassures Kopites. However, behind the scenes, what is Endo’s real picture, and how is it going to unfold next season?

Endo’s Impact and Concerns Last Season

Last season, Endo made 20 appearances in the Premier League as Liverpool secured a record-tying 20th title.

Despite playing the fewest minutes in his Liverpool career, Endo did not complain or underperform. Instead, he often came off the bench to reinforce the midfield and help secure victories.

His relentless pressing, aerial ability, and defensive support proved crucial whenever he was on the pitch.

However, under Slot’s system, Endo’s minutes were reduced as the Dutch manager preferred players able to progress and recover.

This limited playing time partly resulted from Ryan Gravenberch’s emergence, who matched what Slot wanted for his team tactically.

Although dependable defensively, Endo was viewed as less dynamic than others in the squad. As a result, he was frequently used as a late-game “closer” who was brought on to protect leads rather than control the game from the outset.

At 32, Endo is nearing the end of his peak years. Slot is constructing a long-term midfield core with younger, more dynamic players, which means Endo features less often in starting lineups but remains valued for his professionalism, leadership, and clutch contributions late in games.

What’s Next for Endo

When Liverpool exited the Champions League and lost to Newcastle in the League Cup final, Slot admitted his mistake that he should have been more flexible with rotation and bringing Endo in.

He also believed Endo “deserves to come in” for his unsung hero contributions.

Let’s say if Slot had taken responsibility for his words and considered pitching him more, Endo would likely receive more call-ups in the next season.

While some new Reds like Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong will be fully integrated, Endo’s role is expected to be an essential go-to substitute for games outside the league, which relieves pressure on other stalwarts. (Well, if you believe Liverpool can take the quadruple duties)

To be fair, Endo's experience winning back‑to‑back trophies also gives him a unique voice in the dressing room.

Even with fewer minutes, he could still offer intangible leadership and defensive resilience, which remains indispensable to Liverpool’s pursuit of silverware.
