NEW YORK —Mets starter Griffin Canning is already working on his recovery plan.
Back in the Mets locker room at Citi Field after successfully undergoing surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles on Tuesday, his right leg in a cast and in crutches, Canning revealed he’s already utilizing his connections to best maneuver his recovery.
“I’m good friends with Trayce Thompson, so he kinda connected me with his brother,” Canning told reporters in his usual calm demeanor. “It’s pretty early in the stages at this point. I have some questions, so I’m going to reach out to Klay (Thompson) for sure.”

Klay, the Dallas Mavericks shooting guard, knows what it feels like to have a promising season cut short by a devastating injury. He tore his ACL on his left knee in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, a game in which he led in scoring with 30 points.
He tore his Achilles while attempting to come back the following season. Klay returned to the NBA after missing two seasons
Canning left last Thursday’s game against the Atlanta Braves with a ruptured left Achilles tendon while breaking toward a grounder off the bat of shortstop Nick Allen to the left side of the infield.
He was in the middle of a resurgent season, where he was 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 16 starts. The win total and ERA represent career highs for the 29-year-old, and at that strikeout rate, he was on pace to set a high in strikeouts, too.
“It sucks. I want to be out there with the guys,” Canning said. I mean, I just love baseball, so I think that’s probably the worst part, that I just don’t get to play for a while. Been doing some research, reading up on some of the basketball players who have had this.”
