Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi has a decision to make as Tottenham are ready to test the waters for his signature
One of the major reasons for Ange Postecoglou’s sacking at Tottenham was the lack of defensive reinforcements in the squad. The Australian tactician was forced to play inexperienced players at the back as many key defenders were side-lined through injuries. The North London club clearly struggled to perform as a result of that, and that led to the disastrous domestic campaign that Ange’s men endured.
Now, the Lilywhites cannot afford to make the same mistakes again under Thomas Frank. Daniel Levy must aim to bring in new defenders to provide cover at the back. Last season saw Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven forced out of action for crucial games due to long-term injuries. The lack of leadership and control at the back was clearly missing as a result of that.

Backup defender Radu Dragusin also failed to step up as he ruptured his ACL earlier this year. January signing Kevin Danso was also forced to be on the side-lines for two months immediately after joining Spurs due to a long-term knee injury. This just shows that luck was not on their side… still Tottenham somehow managed to end their long-standing trophy drought.

There is a clear need for a defensive upgrade as Tottenham prepares for life under Thomas Frank. With Cristian Romero’s future still remaining uncertain, Daniel Levy must look to sign a quality replacement in the summer if the Argentina international decides to head for pastures new in the coming weeks.
It was reported earlier that Spurs were interested in signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. The Lilywhites have been long-term admirers of the centre-back, and had a bid rejected for his services in January as well. But Daniel Levy is still looking to lure the England international to N17 by offering him a chance to play Champions League football next season.
However, Tottenham are not the only ones willing to pull out all stops to sign the 24-year-old. As per the BBC, Liverpool are also interested in signing Guehi and lead the race for his signature for now. The aforementioned report has also stated that Spurs are not giving up in their pursuit of the Palace captain, and are willing to hijack the deal if push comes to shove in the coming weeks.
Bringing the Palace captain to N17 would instantly elevate the quality of the backline for next season. Guehi’s leadership at the back, along with his potential and massive ceiling, is a recipe for success. The prolific defender would thrive under Thomas Frank as the Dane likes his centre-back to be comfortable on the ball and get involved in the build-up play. The 24-year-old is also comfortable to play either in a back three, or in a back four.

The Lilywhites have also kept some alternatives ready in case they miss out on the England international. Earlier reports suggest that Spurs are looking to bring in Lazio star Mario Gila in the summer if they miss out on Marc Guehi.
