Eagles Receiver Ranks As 'Biggest Surprise' As Training Camp Looms

A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are the Philadelphia Eagles' two best receivers. ... and they make up maybe the NFL's best combo.

Once all the numbers shake out? They will receive most of the passing targets throughout the 2025 season because of that status ... and there is everything right about that.

QB Jalen Hurts, as key as the ground game is to the Super Bowl champs, also has reason to look for ways to get both players the ball, as the Eagles have done over the last three seasons.

But that doesn't mean there aren't other receivers on the roster who merit attention.

Jahan Dotson or Johnny Wilson might get a few opportunities to get the ball.

Or ...

What about another receiver who is getting nice billing after offseason workouts?

ESPN's Tim McManus called receiver pickup Danny Gray the Eagles' "biggest surprise" of the offseason.

"The 26-year-old wideout made an impression during the OTA and minicamp practices open to reporters, using his 4.33 speed to stretch the field and accelerate past defenders on catches over the middle," McManus said. "Gray was a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. He dealt with some injuries and tallied just one reception during his time in San Francisco."

Our view: Gray has his work cut out, whether he impresses the Eagles or not. He saw limited action for the 49ers in 2022 and hasn't appeared in an NFL game since. So there is no track record ... yet.

He is also competing in a receiver room that needs a WR3 to emerge ... but is pretty jammed up with candidates.

But ...

So long as Gray continues to impress in a backup role, he may earn a spot on special teams or in the final receiver spot on the 53-man depth chart. ... while taking his offseason surprise into a regular-season roster berth.
