Dak Prescott is approaching one decade with the Dallas Cowboys.
As he enters his 10th season, the franchise quarterback is coming off his career lows after spending half of the year rehabbing from a hamstring injury, which required surgery. Prescott completed 65 percent of his passes as he threw for 1,978 yards. He tossed 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
With a down year in the rearview, Prescott and the Cowboys are looking forward to having a clean slate soon. Will Prescott be able to move forward without the thought of his job being on the line? One NFL Insider suggests the veteran quarterback doesn't have anything to worry about.
ESPN's Todd Archer recently spoke about the status of Prescott in Dallas, making it clear that his job is simply secure.
"The Cowboys signed him to an extension through 2028 in September that made him the highest-paid quarterback in the game," Archer wrote. "There is not an escape until maybe after the 2027 season. But the contract will be something Prescott will have to measure up to in 2025. He turns 32 in July. In the past five seasons, he has missed time with ankle, thumb, calf and hamstring injuries."
An extensive injury history suggests that Prescott's health might be his biggest threat-and nobody else behind him. Waiting in the wings is a young Joe Milton, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Since the Cowboys acquired him from the New England Patriots, some assumed that the young QB out of Tennessee could pose a threat. Nobody around the Cowboys is really buying that.
"The Cowboys have selected an offensive lineman in the first round of the past two drafts," Archer added. "This year, they added wide receiver George Pickens in a trade. Top receiver CeeDee Lamb is in his prime, and they hope to see big improvement out of their run game to help Prescott."
At this stage in his career, Prescott has 122 games under his belt. He's thrown for 31,437 yards and 213 touchdowns. While he's only led the Cowboys to over 10 wins in a single season on just three occasions, Prescott still holds a winning record, claiming victories in 61 percent of his matchups.
Not many quarterbacks are immune to seeing the sidelines if they are consistently struggling. Last year's run was off for Prescott, but the last time he had a healthy season, Dallas finished 12-5 as he tossed 36 touchdowns to just nine interceptions. There is a lot on the line in Dallas. Prescott's job is not on the list.
