Newcastle United supporters will have perhaps breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of Alexander Isak taking part in their latest kit launch this week. The Swede continues to be linked with a move to Liverpool but his club are adamant they want their star forward to stay put at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies revealed their new third shirt on Tuesday (July 1) with Isak taking part in both the promotional launch video - alongside club cult hero Faustino Asprilla - and photoshoot as he donned the new jersey.

Only time will tell if the striker will remain at Newcastle this summer or if any interested side will try to test their resolve.

But with Isak one of a number of players taking part in the event, the Magpies at least avoided the additional headlines it would have made regarding his future had their most marketable player not been involved.

Of course, Isak is not the only Newcastle star who has been linked with Liverpool either.

The Reds very nearly signed Anthony Gordon last summer after agreeing a £75m deal with their Premier League rivals, only for the Magpies to pull the plug on the transfer after raising funds elsewhere to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.

The England international, who has continued to be linked with a move to Anfield, actually signed a new long-term contract at St. James’ Park back in October. But that has done little to stop the speculation about his future and a possible move to his boyhood club.

Gordon - who was pictured on holiday with Liverpool star Curtis Jones this summer - took part in Newcastle’s promotional video and photoshoot for their new third kit alongside Isak and a number of his team-mates.

And the 24-year-old has now seemingly dropped a hint about his future following his involvement in the promotional material.

Sharing pictures from the kit launch on his Instagram page, Gordon seemingly signalled his intent to stay at Newcastle this season as he wrote: “3rd kit. 3rd season.”

He also gave the kit his seal of approval in a video posted on the club’s social media channels as he said: “It’s phenomenal. I love it. It’s retro. It’s very much my style. I feel like that suits me.”

Gordon joined the Magpies from Everton in a £45m deal back in January 2023 and has made 106 appearances for the club to date, scoring 22 goals.

Since shining during his first full season at St. James’ Park in 2023/24, returning 12 goals from 48 appearances, Gordon has regularly been linked with a move to Liverpool.

And while partly influenced by the Reds’ failed attempt to sign him last summer, such speculation has also been fuelled by the uncertain future of Luis Diaz at Anfield.

The Colombian has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona over the past two years, while both the Catalans and Bayern Munich have seen approaches rejected by Liverpool this summer.

The Reds are adamant they want to retain the forward and have no plans to sell him. While they are relaxed about his situation and are in no rush to negotiate fresh terms, Diaz is keen to discuss an improved contract with the 28-year-old now inside the final two years of his current deal.

Speaking on international duty last month, Diaz admitted that his representatives were in contact with other clubs due to a perceived stagnation over talks about a new contract.

"We are currently in contact with Liverpool, because we are talking to clubs, and that’s normal given the transfer market that’s opening," he said. "We’re trying to arrange what’s best for us.

“We’re talking to clubs, it’s normal in the market and we’re looking at what’s best for us. I’m waiting to see what happens. I’m very happy at Liverpool, I’ve always said so. They’ve welcomed me very well from day one. If they give us a good renewal or I stay there for two years, I’ll be happy. Now it’s up to them.”

The future of Diaz, who is also attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, will continue to be the subject of transfer speculation as a result regardless of Liverpool’s stance.

And that in turn will ensure the Reds continue to be linked with the likes of Gordon despite his latest admission.
