Liverpool just did something that will be celebrated at Newcastle, it's nothing to do with…

Liverpool are not going to sign Alexander Isak this summer, nor are they going to sign his Newcastle United teammate.

Newcastle are not going to sell Isak, despite Liverpool supporters being in love with the idea of him swapping St James’ Park for Anfield. Instead, he is going to remain in the North East, with Isak set to be offered a new Newcastle contract.

But the 25-year-old is not the only Newcastle United player that has been linked with Liverpool. It has been suggested that Liverpool could target Anthony Gordon if they decide to sell Luis Diaz. The Scouser would replace the Colombian, 12 months after almost joining the Reds amid Newcastle’s PSR debacle.

The Magpies pulled the plug on Gordon going to Liverpool for £75million in 2024, and there appears to be no chance of a move in 2025 either, much to the delight of the Toon Army.

Liverpool make Luis Diaz decision

That is because Liverpool have made a decision about Luis Diaz’s future on Merseyside.

According to the Telegraph, Liverpool have no intention of selling Diaz this summer after interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

With Diaz unequivocally not for sale, there will be no need for a replacement. That will end any speculation of Gordon returning to the city where he was born.

While Arsenal are admirers of Gordon too, it appears extremely likely that the England international will remain part of Eddie Howe’s plans.

Anthony Gordon under pressure to deliver for Newcastle United after up and down 2024/25 season

That is excellent news for everyone associated with Newcastle United, but Gordon certainly has a point to prove when the 2025/26 campaign begins.

2025 has been a tough year for the Magpies’ number 10. Gordon missed the Carabao Cup final due to suspension, while his return to action was delayed by injury.

When he was fit again, his place in the starting XI had been taken by a Harvey Barnes who was playing the best football of his Toon career. For the first time since the beginning of the 2023/24 season, Gordon was not a guaranteed starter.

Eventually, Gordon did get back in the starting XI. However, his performances were nowhere near the level that Toon fans have come to expect from a player who has largely been brilliant since arriving for £45million from Everton.

The season ended poorly, and it started poorly too. Gordon was not himself, with his game lacking sharpness. There was also a hangover from a disappointing Euro 2024 and the Liverpool transfer saga.

But with no distractions going into the 2025/26 season, Newcastle United fans will hopefully see Gordon back to his best as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous wingers.
