Villa News Speaking to Bryan King

Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens have examined various routes to ensure Aston Villa’s future finances.

The Villa owners are looking to back Unai Emery in the transfer market this summer to help the Spaniard get the Claret and Blues back into the UEFA Champions League places next season.

However, the club have been limited by ongoing financial issues and are working to stay within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules guidelines.

The hierarchy have explored the idea of selling prized assets like Amadou Onana this summer, but are aware it will negatively impact the team’s fortunes.

NSWE have already faced fines from UEFA, and are now taking controversial, desperate measures to alleviate the financial pressures on their shoulders.

NSWE to sell Aston Villa’s Women’s team

As reported by Athletic journalist David Ornstein on X (30 June), Villa will sell a stake in their women’s team to alleviate some of their financial woes.

Todd Boehly was the first to exploit this loophole at Chelsea, and it should allow the West Midlands club far more flexibility in this summer’s transfer market.

NSWE have come under intense scrutiny for this decision as it sets a bad precedent for the women’s game if their teams are sold just to help fund the men’s team.

Former Villa scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes that it won’t completely change the club’s situation, and that Villa could still need to sell players this window.

“It’s the same with every football club now,” King said.

“The important thing now isn’t just getting the right players in, but getting your finances correct to be able to operate. This is what most Premier League clubs are working hard on at the moment.

“Finances now are a major issue in England. Therefore, talks will be held, and deals will be done. However, I can’t see this changing too much at Aston Villa. If they’ve got to sell players to balance the books, that is what they’ve got to do, but they still need to replace these players.”

Villa ownership are playing with fire

Last season’s final day showed just how fragile Villa’s situation is as they missed out on Champions League qualification on goal difference.

This has had huge ramifications and should have elicited a new approach from the Villans’ hierarchy to ensure the club’s long-term stability.

However, instead of focusing on younger players or addressing their wage structure, NSWE are cutting corners and selling assets in hopes of instant rewards, which is an extremely risky strategy in the long term.

They are playing with fire, and if they do not match this approach with success on the pitch, Villa’s fortunes could start to crumble very quickly.
