Coleraine wished the teenager well after completing his move across the water saying they will be "watching his journey with pride".

"Matthew has progressed through the ranks at the Coleraine Academy since the age of 13, has consistently impressed with his work ethic, technical ability, and dedication both on and off the pitch," the club said.

"His move to a prestigious club like Sunderland is a testament not only to his own commitment but also to the outstanding development environment provided by our Academy.

"We would like to place on record our sincere thanks and appreciation to all the coaches and staff at our Academy – across all age groups – who have played a crucial role in Matthew’s progression. Their time, guidance, and support have helped shape him into the player and person he is today.
