Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is no longer contracted at St James’ Park and can leave for nothing.

Burnley are considering a surprise swoop for Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson - now available on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old’s contract at St James’ Park expired on Monday, although he is debating a fresh deal. It is understood that Newcastle have offered Wilson an extension on reduced terms as he approaches the twilight of his career.

The England international stayed fit during the back end of last season but failed to make an impact at Premier League level. Wilson did not score a top-flight goal in 2024-25 as Alexander Isak carried the burden up front.

Burnley want Callum Wilson

The Telegraph now claim Burnley want Wilson as they aim to add Premier League experience to their ranks. Scott Parker’s men earned promotion via defensive stability - conceding just 16 goals all season.

Toon target James Trafford racked up a record-breaking 29 clean sheets between the sticks to increase his valuation. As well as the backline was, the Clarets want top-flight experience in attacking areas.

The report also names Jamie Vardy and Dominic Calvert-Lewin - both free agents - as possible alternatives. Pursuing first-team football could appeal to Wilson after being reduced to a backup role at St James’ Park in recent times.

James Trafford saga continues

NewcastleWorld understands that both clubs are locked in negotiations for Trafford. It is no secret that the Magpies admire the goalkeeper having almost signed him last year.

Trafford also wants the deal - but a 20 per cent sell-on clause inserted when he left Manchester City is proving a stumbling block. Burnley believe the 22-year-old is worth considerably more than the fee agreed 12 months ago.

There is optimism that a compromise can be reached for a player Newcastle have viewed as their long-term goalkeeper target. An offer worth around £25million has already been turned down.

Callum Wilson on future

Wilson has stayed calm when discussing his future in recent weeks. He said: "I’m comfortable now. Financially, thankfully, I’m stable so that’s not an issue. I know I’m still able to provide for my family and put food on the table for them.

“I know my worth and I know my value and I’m still so hungry inside that even though I know Alex is scoring goals, I’m still frustrated when the team sheet comes out and I’m not starting so I know I’m not ready to leave football yet.

“I’d love to leave football before football leaves me. I’d never let an injury stop me from playing - I think I’ve been fit now four-and-a-half months but I’ve probably only played 250 or 300 minutes and that side of things are frustrating because you don’t want to last few years on your career to fizzle away from you, especially when you’re worked so hard to get to that point.

“It’s all new for me at the moment but I’m just enjoying life, enjoying football and playing with a smile on my face. What’s meant to be will be.”
