Leeds United have agreed a new contract for winger Dan James this week, seeing him set to extend his stay at the club beyond 2026, having entered the final 12 months of his Elland Road contract.
Leeds have important business to attend to in strengthening the side, but tying down key players for the future is another key aspect of the transfer window to focus on.
Junior Firpo’s free transfer exit was confirmed on Tuesday, and the club now have other contracts to focus on with a handful heading into the final 12 months of their deals.

Dan James was one of those players that is in the final year of his contract at the club, having joined on a five-year-deal from Manchester United in 2021 under Marcelo Bielsa.
The 24/25 season was James’ best senior campaign to date with 12 goals and nine assists, seeing him nominated for the Championship Player of the Season.

Now, the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath reports that the winger has agreed a new long-term contract to stay put at Elland Road beyond 2026 when his initial deal was due to expire.
The £25million signing’s new contract length isn’t specified, but James’ wages could have been reduced based on the terms previously signed when moving from Old Trafford.
Reports earlier in the summer claimed that the 49ers would be reviewing the wage structure in order to offer terms that better reflected a player’s role in the squad, seeing Firpo leave after looking to offer reduced terms.

It’s currently difficult to say whether James will be a vital part of our starting lineup in the Premier League like he was in the Championship, but he’s certainly going to be important.
His pace and pressing are crucial assets for a side that are going to be second best in terms of quality in most games that they play.
Losing him for nothing in a year would have been a really poor development, but we don’t have to worry about that now.
