Report: £5m January Celtic Target Future Still Unresolved

Celtic’s pursuit of Louie Barry remains a topic of interest as the summer transfer window progresses.

The 22-year-old forward, who was a target for the Hoops in January, is now attracting attention from multiple clubs, including Sheffield United.

In January, Celtic reportedly submitted an initial bid of £5 million for Barry, with an additional £5 million in potential add-ons. The bid also included a buy-back clause for Aston Villa, indicating the Hoops’ willingness to accommodate Villa’s long-term plans for the player.

However, Villa manager Unai Emery reportedly rejected the offer, emphasising Barry’s importance to the club’s future and expressing a desire to extend his contract.

Following the failed transfer, Barry was loaned to Hull City for the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, his time at Hull was cut short due to a knee cartilage injury sustained during a match against Sunderland on February 22. He made only four appearances for Hull without registering a goal or assist before returning to Villa for rehabilitation.

Despite the setback, Barry’s impressive form earlier in the season with Stockport County, where he scored 16 goals in 24 appearances, has kept him on the radar of several clubs. Hull City had agreed on a £3.5 million permanent move for Barry, but financial challenges have cast doubt on the completion of the deal.

Sheffield United, under new manager Ruben Selles, have reignited their interest in Barry. Selles, who previously worked with Barry during his loan spell at Hull City, is keen on bringing the young forward to Bramall Lane to bolster United’s attacking options.

Aston Villa are reportedly open to selling Barry this summer as they look to balance their books and comply with financial regulations. This development has paved the way for Sheffield United to make a move for the 22-year-old.

Celtic, having failed to sign Barry in January, are monitoring the situation closely.

With competition from Sheffield United and the uncertainty surrounding Hull City’s finances, the Hoops may consider revisiting their interest in Barry as the transfer window unfolds.
