Romelu Lukaku’s time at Manchester United will always be remembered as one of unfulfilled potential.

Signed under Jose Mourinho in 2017, the Belgian striker was expected to be the long-term solution to United’s striker issues.

He made an immediate impact with 27 goals in all competitions during his debut season.

However, his second year saw a dip – finishing with just 15 goals.

Struggles with form, fitness and tactical fit under both Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eventually led to his exit from Old Trafford in 2019.

Now, Lukaku has revealed he never even wanted the move in the first place.

Speaking to Koolcast Sport as relayed by Het Nieuwsblad, the 32-year-old admitted: “I had already told everyone: I’m going to Chelsea.

“But suddenly Mourinho called me to say that Manchester United had made an offer.”

The Belgian added: “I came back from vacation and suddenly there was an agreement with Everton.

“I said to Mino [Raiola, after the move]: ‘I don’t want this’, and then I decided now I’m doing everything myself.”

Despite 42 goals and 12 assists in 96 games, Lukaku believes the move was a mistake and has since taken control of his own career decisions.

After a return to Chelsea in 2021 and spells in Italy, Lukaku now plays for Napoli.

He has found form under Antonio Conte again, having scored 14 goals and 10 assists last season.

Lukaku is set to form a new attacking partnership, reuniting with Belgian teammate with Kevin De Bruyne.

Although United fans were happy to see the back of Lukaku, United haven’t exactly seen any better striker walk through the door since.

Rasmus Hojlund has struggled to perform anywhere near expectations, having faced huge criticism last season.

A proven, experienced goalscorer is what United lack in the present.

Whether they sort that problem position out this summer, remains to be seen.
