Not every Manchester United academy graduate manages to break through at Old Trafford.

Ethan Galbraith was once seen as a midfielder with serious potential but now finds himself set to play for Swansea City.

Axel Tuanzebe, was once tipped to become a dependable first-team squad player, now plays for Burnley following a series of loan spells.

Such journeys are a reminder of how brutal the pathway to the top can be.

Even for those who come through United’s ranks from a young age.

Now, another former United youth product has taken the next step in his career.

As confirmed on Rangers’ official website, Joe Rothwell has signed for the Scottish giants on a three-year deal following his departure from Bournemouth.

The 30-year-old midfielder is the latest addition to Russell Martin’s squad.

He previously worked with the Gers boss during a loan spell at Southampton.

Rothwell said: “I am delighted to have the deal done and be here. It is brilliant.

“The size of the club speaks for itself and as soon as the interest was there it was an immediate yes from me.”

Martin added: “His leadership, professionalism and quality were a huge asset.

He’s joining on the back of two promotions and brings a real winning mentality to the group.”

Rothwell began his career at Manchester United aged six and worked his way up to the fringes of the senior squad before leaving for Blackpool on loan.

He later impressed at Oxford United and Blackburn Rovers before earning a Premier League move to Bournemouth and later helping Southampton and Leeds secure promotion.

Notably, he featured for United’s U19s in the 2013/14 season, playing six games and scoring once before departing the following summer.
