The Boston Celtics are turning to a former Mizzou standout to lead their G League squad.

The Celtics announced Phil Pressey as the head coach of the Maine Celtics for the 2025-26 season.

I’d like to thank Brad Stevens, Joe Mazzulla, and the entire Celtics organization for believing in me and giving me a chance to grow, lead, and develop,” Pressey said in a released statement. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and I will give my all to this team. The community of Portland is amazing, and I remember my time as a player was unforgettable at the Expo. My goal is to instill winning habits into every player who suits up for the Maine Celtics.

Pressey played guard at Mizzou from 2010-13, receiving accolades in 2 conferences. He was an All-Big 12 2011-12 selection after leading the conference in assists and steals. The following year, he made first-team All-SEC and led the conference in assists.

The Celtics note that Pressey is the first time Maine has had a head coach who played for the team. Pressey was part of the Celtics organization as a player from 2013-15. He had a memorable Maine game on Feb. 5, 2015, recording 34 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists.

We’re excited to welcome Phil to the Maine Celtics as our new head coach,” said Maine Celtics General Manager Jarell Christian. “Phil’s journey – from playing in the NBA and NBA G League to developing talent with the Boston Celtics – makes him the perfect fit to lead our team and connect with the Maine community. We can’t wait for our fans to get to know him and see the energy and passion he brings to the game.

Pressey returned to his alma mater to begin his coaching career, joining the Mizzou staff as an assistant coach in 2022. He then accepted a Player Development position with the Celtics in 2023.
