Narrow defeat for Maritz on opening night

Noelle Maritz suffered a 2-1 defeat in the opening UEFA Women's Euro 2025 game this evening as Switzerland were beaten by Norway.

Maritz, who has amassed over 125 appearances for her country, played the full 90 for Switzerland as they were pegged back in Basel.

The defender produced a stellar first-half performance as she helped her side take a 1-0 lead into the break as Nadine Riesen's goal was the difference.

But the host nation weren't able to hold on as a towering header from Ada Hegerberg and an unfortunate own goal from Julia Stierli inflicted defeat.

Elsewhere in Group A, Finland produced an impressive 1-0 win over Iceland as Katariina Kosola's second-half goal was enough to secure the victory.

This evening's results sees Norway take the top spot in the group with Finland sat in second, Switzerland in third and Iceland in fourth place.

Maritz and Switzerland are back in action on Sunday as they face Iceland at the Wankdorf Stadium at 8pm (BST).
