As winners of 17 championships, the Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most successful franchises in NBA history. While the Boston Celtics surpassed the Lakers by winning their 18th championship last year, both teams are viewed as some of the most attractive landing spots for players picking teams in free agency.
Though the Celtics, who are expected to be without Jayson Tatum for the bulk, if not the entirety of the regular season, may not be as intriguing a landing spot as the Lakers, who boast Luka Doncic and LeBron James, and are still looking to add more.
Now, one of the key Celtics from their latest championship run could be plotting to switch sides and join the Lakers instead.
According to ESPN’s NBA insider Brian Windhorst, “there’s a decent chance” Al Horford will either wind up on the Lakers, Golden State Warriors, or head to retirement this offseason.
It’s amazing that, even at the advanced age of 39, Horford still has multiple options in free agency, and it’s a bonus that they’re both from contending teams. Thus, if he still has the itch to play after 18 seasons in the NBA, Horford will likely have an offer waiting for him.
While his skills have been dwindling for several seasons, Horford still averaged 27.7 minutes per game across 42 starts for the Celtics this past year. If an elite team like Boston still found his services to be valuable, then chances are others will too.
