NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - From future Division I prospects, to OG League invitees, to current and former NBA players, chances are they’ll be a dime a dozen during Peach Jam.
This week, the Riverview Activities Center is transforming into the EYBL Arena.
“At times you feel like you walk in here today, you feel like your building’s shrinking because so much is going on,” said Rick Meyer, director of North Augusta Parks and Recreation.
In year one, they had about two dozen teams. Year 29 – six times that.
“On social media, somebody takes a picture of Lebron James sitting in a gym, and boom, here come people running to the activity center,” said Meyer.
Or a chance to see a future NBA overall pick.
“I really didn’t know who he was, but it didn’t take one game to walk up and you see all the crowd up there in the front in gym one, and you’re going, what’s going on in there? They said, well, Cooper Flagg’s playing, you know, I said, well, who’s he? And they said, walk in the gym,” said Meyer.
This year, there will be more chances to watch. Nike always has four tournaments across the country before they get to the Peach Jam.
“Well, this year, they’ve done three, and tournament number four is happening right here in North Augusta, the weekend prior to the actual Peach Jam event,” he said.
What was once one is now two, and two shots at seeing the coach repping that college gear you keep in your closet.
“This year, the college coaches get to be here both weekends, because both weekends are live recruiting periods,” said Meyer.
From the still currents, to the wish-to-bees and the breakouts, you can’t put square footage on the talent coming to North Augusta.
Work on the gym started on Saturday to hopefully get everything ready for when the first few teams start to play on July 10.
