The summer transfer window is now in full swing as the Premier League financial year resets, and Newcastle remain active in the market, with several players linked with both moves in and out of the club.
Following their Carabao Cup success - their first major domestic trophy in 70 years - Eddie Howe will be keen to push his team even further. With Champions League football returning to St James' Park after a fifth-place Premier League finish, the Magpies boss is expected to target reinforcements to strengthen his squad ahead of a demanding season.
The club have been linked with a host of high-profile targets, including RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons and former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi. However, securing deals hasn’t been straightforward for Newcastle.
With that in mind, ChronicleLive has taken a look at two big transfer headlines currently surrounding the club’s summer dealings.
Xavi Simons decision
RB Leipzig’s star midfielder has attracted significant interest this summer following another eye-catching campaign. Arsenal and Tottenham were both rumoured to be keeping tabs on Simons, with German outlet BILD suggesting that Newcastle were also among the contenders for his signature.
However, those rumours have now been quashed - BILD has reported that Simons has no interest in joining Newcastle this summer.
While Simons’ quality is undeniable, this development may not be entirely negative for the Magpies. The Dutch international has already been involved in four separate transfers or loan moves since 2022. For a club like Newcastle, aiming to build long-term under Howe, there may be question marks over the 22-year-old’s ability to settle and show loyalty.
Former Arsenal midfielder interest
Italian media outlet Il Messaggero have claimed that Newcastle are interested in signing former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi. The 26-year-old has spent the last two seasons with Lazio.
He played Premier League football across two campaigns for the Gunners where he seemingly failed to show his full talent.
If Newcastle are seriously interested in the Frenchman, then they could face competition from local rivals Sunderland, alongside Aston Villa. No offers have been made and Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri is reportedly keen to keep Guendouzi.
The midfielder carries a €50m (£43.2m) release clause. Whether Howe will actively pursue Guendouzi is unknown, but the option is there if the Newcastle boss chooses to do so.
