Mavericks found a new coach

Frank Vogel, the 2020 NBA championship-winning coach with the Lakers, is set to become the new Dallas Mavericks' lead assistant (associate head coach) under Jason Kidd.

Frank Vogel is finalizing an agreement to join the Dallas Mavericks as lead assistant coach under Jason Kidd, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.

This move reunites Vogel and Kidd, who won an NBA title together with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. Back then, Vogel was the head coach and Kidd one of his assistants when the Lakers captured their 17th championship in the Orlando Bubble.

This time, the roles are reversed: Vogel will serve as associate head coach after spending last season as a consultant in Dallas. Both coaches are 52 years old.

Kidd recruited Vogel to serve as an adviser for the Mavericks last season. Vogel will now replace Sean Sweeney, who left for the San Antonio Spurs, as Dallas' lead assistant.

Vogel was fired by the Phoenix Suns in May 2024 after leading the team to a 49-33 record in his lone season. He had signed a five-year, $31 million contract with Phoenix in June 2023.

In addition to his time with the Lakers and Suns, Vogel previously coached the Indiana Pacers for six seasons and the Orlando Magic for two.

He holds a career coaching record of 479-422 and is a two-time NBA All-Star Game head coach (2014 and 2020).

In a separate move, Mavericks player development coach God Shammgod has agreed to join the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach, per Shams Charania. Shammgod had been part of the Mavs organization since 2019.
