Real Madrid have recovered Alexander Arnold’s transfer cost after Juventus win

One of the main beneficiaries of Xabi Alonso’s arrival at Real Madrid has been Fran Garcia, who has become a regular starter on the left flank during the Club World Cup in the absence of the injured Ferland Mendy.

The left-back has raised his performance level after two inconsistent seasons under Carlo Ancelotti.

Timely step up for Fran

It must be noted that Real Madrid are actively working on the signing of Alvaro Carreras ahead of next season.

The Benfica player is the club’s number one target to strengthen the left-back position, and Los Blancos hope to finalise the deal after the Club World Cup. However, the Portuguese club continues to demand the full €50 million release clause.

As the danger of his arrival and increased competition looms, Garcia has become one of the positive surprises for Real Madrid during the Club World Cup. He has started all four matches, playing the full 90 minutes in each, and provided an assist in the match against Salzburg.

The Spanish left-back’s physical capacity to cover the entire left flank and improved connection with Vinicius Jr. have been key factors in his resurgence.

Tactical shift playing a key role

The tactical shift that new manager Xabi Alonso is implementing – from a flat back four to a five-man defence with three centre-backs and two wing-backs – has been crucial for Garcia’s improvement.

In fact, the ex-Rayo Vallecano ace himself acknowledged the same after the victory over Juventus last night.

“The way the coach wants us to play suits my style perfectly. It’s about creating more chances and helping our forwards finish them,” he noted.

“Trent and I are both working on pushing up the pitch and connecting with our attack. That’s really important for the team.”

Against the Bianconeri, Garcia misplaced only one pass, won eight of the 12 duels he contested, and was only dribbled past once, showing good levels both in attack and defence.

With Carreras expected to arrive soon and Real Madrid possibly likely to axe one of their current left-backs, Garcia has shown enough to secure his future.
