Newcastle United are looking to cash in on a fringe midfielder this summer following back-to-back Championship loans.
The 30-year-old has enjoyed successful short stints at Loftus Road and Fratton Park in recent seasons. Hayden helped QPR avoid relegation over the second half of the 2023/24 season and did the same with Portsmouth last year.
Hayden made 17 appearances for both teams and hasn’t played for the Magpies since December 2021. He is not part of Eddie Howe’s plans at Newcastle United and has been trying to secure a permanent move away from the club in recent years.
Newcastle United to sell Isaac Hayden
The midfielder’s lofty Premier League wage demands have made that difficult and he has had to settle for loan spells. The Athletic now reports that the player has been transfer listed by Newcastle United again.
QPR were credited with interest in Hayden last summer after his loan stay with the club. West Brom were also linked with a move in January before Hayden made the temporary switch to Fratton Park.
Hayden had spoken of his willingness to return to QPR when leaving Loftus Road 12 months ago and has also hinted at a potential future at Portsmouth. When the south coast club confirmed survival, he took to social media and wrote: “Delighted to have achieved safety with two games remaining, for the players, the coaching and backroom staff, everyone deserves it for all the hard work and dedication through adversity at times this season. Hopefully we can finish the season on a high with good performances in the remaining games, giving momentum for the club next season.”
Hayden told to prioritise minutes ahead of Portsmouth loan
Portsmouth had no obligation to make the loan a permanent deal this summer. Hayden, who made his debut for the Jamaica national team last year having switched allegiances from England, had been told by Reggae Boyz boss Steve McClaren to prioritise getting minutes at this stage of his career.
Ahead of the January window, former QPR boss said: “[Isaac] realises that he’s in the reserves at Newcastle. He needs a club in January. This is as much about the March [international] window, the summer window, and the next World Cup window as it is this window.
“Every player needs a cause. Every player needs motivation, and his motivation is to get back playing at the level he was three or four years ago. To be able to commit to Jamaica and, hopefully, to another club in January will only make him better.”
In other news, QPR now have decision to make over 'brilliant' player as rivals express transfer interest.
