Chelsea and Fulham supporters are set to have another pub to choose from ahead of the new Premier League season.
JD Wetherspoon will open a new pub at Fulham Broadway next week, walking distance from Chelsea and Fulham football clubs ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
Enzo Maresca’s team begin their campaign with the visit of Crystal Palace to Stamford Bridge on August 27. The Cottagers kick off their season at Brighton on August 16 before a first home fixture against Manchester United on August 23.
Neither west London club is short of watering holes in the general vicinity of the ground given their central location but the budget pub chain is set to add competition for the more longstanding local options.
JD Wetherspoon to open new Fulham Broadway pub
Walham Green at 472 Fulham Road will open its doors on Tuesday, July 8 in the former entrance and ticket hall of Fulham Broadway station. The pub will also have a beer garden, which may come in handy ahead of those summer fixtures to start the Premier League campaign.
The new JD Wetherspoon will be just a four minute or 0.2 mile walk to Stamford Bridge. For Fulham supporters, it’s a 31 minute or 1.4 mile walk to Craven Cottage.
The nearest JD Wetherspoon options around the clubs are The William Morris at Hammersmith and The Rocket in Putney. The chain’s website describes Walham Green as: “This distinctive property comprises the grade II listed former entrance building and ticket hall of Fulham Broadway tube station.
“Designed by the railway company architect Harry W Ford, the Edwardian baroque-style entrance was built in 1910 on the site of the original station entrance, which first opened on 1 March 1880. The station was called Walham Green, after the village which occupied what is now Fulham Broadway. Over 70 years later (in 1952), the name was changed to Fulham Broadway.”
JD Wetherspoon spend £2.5 million on Walham Green
Walham Green is one of several JD Wetherspoon pubs currently set to open in London and around the capital between now and the end of the year. The Sun Wharf in London Bridge is expected to open on September 2 with The Sir Alexander Fleming in Paddington following on September 23.
Walham Green was the original name of the tube station with the stop known under that name for more than 70 years until 1952. Fulham SW6 report that the JD Wetherspoon development has cost £2.5 million and that it will be a two storey pub.
When the project was approved by the Hammersmith and Fulham council, JD Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We are looking forward to opening our new pub in Fulham. We are confident that it will appeal to a wide range of people and be an asset to the area’s social scene.”
