Newcastle United chiefs are growing increasingly confident that a new contract will be struck for Alexander Isak.

All summer long there has been talk that Isak will become Newcastle's highest paid player. And Chronicle Live understands that the numbers that have been put to the Sweden international should be enough to fend off Liverpool.

We also understand that Arsenal stepped back from Isak at the start of the transfer window with the Gunners knowing that Newcastle had big plans for the £63million man.

With Newcastle insisting that Isak is contracted until 2028, one of the key tasks of the next incoming sporting director will be to tie Isak down to a longer contract.

As reported by Chronicle Live throughout the summer, Newcastle have not received any approach from Liverpool nor even had a phone call from the Reds. Constant speculation continues while Merseyside journalists have been briefed about not ruling out a bid later in the window.

What is very true at the moment is that Isak has not handed in any type of transfer request or demanded any crisis talks. It is quite the opposite in that he is calmly assessing the situation and he is due to report back for pre-season next week.

Now things can change, but I don't see any play from the striker to push for a move. The plan was to sit down and talk about a new contract, and that remains the case.

On the Liverpool side, they have not bid or approached Newcastle yet so anything else remains speculation.

Does that mean the Reds aren't interested? No. But Newcastle are in control.
