Villa News Speaking to Martin Allen

Birmingham City have shown an interest in Aston Villa youngster Louie Barry this summer.

It hasn’t become unusual in recent years for Blues to scrounge around Villa Park to take certain players across the second city.

Scott Hogan is the most recent example, with Jota moving the other way in a hugely bizarre deal after the B6 club were promoted in 2019.

A new deal could see Barry become the latest player to swap claret and blue for royal blue, but a sizable fee could be involved.

Aston Villa to set Barry transfer demand

There is no doubt about how much talent Barry has and how much of an impact he can make when given the chance.

This was on show throughout his loan spell at Stockport County, and could have been replicated with Hull City had the striker not picked up a season-ending injury.

With that being said, a permanent switch to the Tigers has now collapsed for Barry, something which could pique the interest of other sides.

Birmingham City are one of many linked to the versatile forward, with an offer potentially set to come in from Tom Wagner at St Andrew’s.

That may prove to be the case as the summer rolls on, but former Brentford and Leicester City boss Martin Allen believes it would be more beneficial to Villa to loan out the young attacker.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Allen said: “I’d let him out on loan for another year, then bring him back.

“Put him out at Championship level and review the situation in a year. I think he’s got much more ahead of him because he’s already a really good player. Would Villa sell him to Birmingham City?

“The accountant certainly wouldn’t mind, those dealing with PSR won’t care what team he goes to. I just think he could do with another year in the Championship, and then bring him back into the Villa team, then sell him if needed.

“If that happens, he’ll be worth much more; you couldn’t even put a number on him then, especially if he gets 15 goals. The fee would be absolutely massive.”

Barry could leave Aston Villa on loan once again

Barry could still join Birmingham City

The rivalry between the Villans and Blues can’t be underestimated, but in the world of football finances, a sale is a sale at the end of the day.

If a deal with Hull had gone through for Barry, the links to St Andrew’s would have immediately gone away, but they are now likely to resurface.

It will now be down to Unai Emery and Co. to decide whether Barry goes out on loan again or if a permanent departure is given the seal of approval.
