Netflix series hits Cowboys’ highs

DALLAS -- Netflix on Monday released the trailer for its upcoming documentary "America's Team: The Gambler and his Cowboys" detailing Jerry Jones' acquisition of the Dallas Cowboys franchise and the team's run of Super Bowl success in the 1990s.

The series is set for release Aug. 19, and viewers were given a snippet of what's to come in the trailer.

Below is a list of the 10 biggest storylines teased in the trailer, from the obvious plotlines to the snippets and flashes from the doc that will likely get a good bit of time amid the eight-episode series.

JONES BUYS THE TEAM

Of course a big chunk of the series, perhaps even a full episode or two, will be devoted to Jones' purchase of the Cowboys' franchise. The wildcatter from Arkansas is featured in the trailer with a talking head that tells the viewer: "We were gambling my family's whole fortune, so I had to take risks."

That he did.

Not only did Jones' reign start with one of the most unpopular moves in franchise history (more on that below) he also bucked the system with bold moves like circumventing the NFL's sponsorship deal with Coke to sign a lucrative deal with Pepsi.

Cowboys fans can trust they'll be getting plenty of Jerry over the eight-episode span.

JERRY FIRES TOM LANDRY

"When I bought the team, I was Darth Vader."

Yeah, there's only one thing that line from the trailer could be referencing.

Jones' firing of longtime Cowboys coach and franchise icon Tom Landry got him and the Cowboys faithful off to a rough start -- some longtime diehards still haven't forgiven him.

It looks like the trailer will touch on the reaction, even the death threats Jones received, after the controversial move.

JERRY HIRES JIMMY

But as we know in 2025, the firing of Landry worked out pretty well, considering who was brought in after him.

The series will no doubt spend a heavy amount of time on the Jones-Johnson relationship, the rise and the fall, and the peaks the duo took this franchise to when things were going the right way.

"It was a runaway train," Troy Aikman says in the trailer when discussing the rabid success of those '90s Cowboys.

JIMMY JOHNSON: COACH

One of the most viral clips from the trailer is what is perhaps Johnson's second-most famous line as the Cowboys head coach, after one of his players attempted to dip out of practice due to an asthma attack.

"Asthma my ass, go over there on that other field and have some asthma!"

The doc will surely delve into the old-school, hard-nosed style of coach the Cowboys got in Johnson, including the extremely demanding practices he ran that helped turn around the locker room culture of those '90s teams.

Says Michael Irvin: "He made practice hell, so the game is heaven."

HERSCHEL WALKER TRADE

Of course, you can't talk about the success of the '90s Cowboys without telling the story of how they were built.

You'll likely hear both Jones and Johnson talking about the Hershel Walker trade that laid the foundation for the '90s Cowboys, along with the crown jewel of the draft pick haul they got from that deal: legendary running back Emmitt Smith.

PARADE RUNS AMOK

After the Cowboys won the 1993 Super Bowl, an estimated 400,000 people gathered in downtown Dallas for the team's victory parade. The delirium of the oversized crowd combined with an underwhelming police presence resulted in mass chaos and even violence, leading to 14 arrests and two dozen sent to the hospital.

That's sure to be one of the darker segments of the series.

WHITE HOUSE DRAMA

The main conflict in the docuseries appears to revolve around how the fame, stardom and success of those '90s teams started to spin out of control. What goes up must come down.

In one clip star wide receiver Michael Irvin appears to be discussing the "White House" scandal, or something similar to it, detailing the infamous spot where players hosted wild parties that often housed illegal activities. Irvin mimics a police officer pointing a gun and yelling "Open the door!" in the clip.

JERRY'S FABULOUS TOYS

Of course, the Cowboys haven't had much on-field success since the heyday of those '90s teams. Off the field is a different story.

The series looks to touch on all the shiny new toys Jones has received since taking over the Cowboys franchise, including the $1.3 billion AT&T Stadium built in Arlington in 2009, the $2 billion practice facility "The Star" in Frisco, the $250 million yacht named after Jerry's wife and other lavish Jonesisms that have come along with being the most valuable professional sports franchise in the world.

RING OF HONOR

The trailer closes in perhaps the only way it could, with the most famous line ever uttered about the Dallas Cowboys.

"How 'bout them Cowboys?!" Jimmy Johnson yells in the trailer, with the edit splitting the line between his famous roar after the 1992 conference championship game win, to his epic sign-off after finally being inducted into the franchise's Ring of Honor in 2023. Just as the series will likely spend a big chunk on the Jones-Johnson downfall, expect a decent amount of time on their makeup as well.
