Former Wolves star Diogo Jota has reportedly died at the age of 28.

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Diogo Jota has passed away following a car crash in Spain, Spanish and Portuguese media have reported.

MARCA claims Jota died early this morning in a traffic accident in the Sanabria region of Spain. The 28-year-old Liverpool winger was reportedly travelling with his brother, aged 26, when the vehicle went off the road. According to witnesses, the car was engulfed in flames.

The incident occured on the A-52 in the province of Zamora. Emergency services in both the Castilla and Leon regions have confirmed the crash took place this morning.

A statement read: “The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.

“1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident. From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene.”

Jota was only married in Porto less than two weeks ago, to his long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso. Their first child was born in 2021 and they welcomed their third baby in November.

Widely regarded a hero at Molineux, Jota scored 44 goals and provided 19 assists in 131 games for Wolves between 2017 and 2020. The forward was particularly prolific during the 2017/18 campaign as he scored 17 goals during Wanderers’ Championship promotion season.

Jota then signed for Liverpool in 2020 for a fee of £41 million. The Portugal international played 182 times for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists. He helped the club lift the Premier League title last season and was also part of the side that won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in 2022.
