Joao Gomes and Mario Lemina react as Tommy Doyle officially seals loan to Birmingham from Wolves

Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle has officially completed a loan move to Birmingham.

The 23-year-old will spend the 2025/26 season at St. Andrew’s, and hope for the regular football he could not get at Molineux.

Doyle made just 26 appearances last term, for a total of 656 minutes.

He was struggling in the first half of the season anyway, but the arrival of Vitor Pereira midway through the campaign did not help his cause at all.

Pereira handed Doyle a few opportunities, but it was clear that he preferred players with a different profile.

After Pereira had criticised Doyle after a defeat to Nottingham Forest, saying he went ‘missing’, the writing was on the wall. And things looked even more ominous when Doyle was left out of the matchday squad several times in the last two months of the season.

Doyle has now sealed a loan move to Birmingham – and received some messages from Wolves players last night.

Doyle now has a chance to get regular minutes under his belt.

Doyle has played in the Championship before with Sheffield United and thrived, so there will be high hopes at Wolves that he can really shine.

And that would be ideal, either to prepare Doyle for another chance at Molineux in 2026, or to raise his market value ahead of a sale.

Last night, Doyle posted on Instagram to mark his move to Birmingham, writing on Instagram: “Motivated for the season ahead. Big goals to achieve. Can’t wait to get started. 💙”

A number of players he’s played with responded:

Joao Gomes – ‘I’ll miss you so much lattt 🥹❤️‍🔥’

Dan Bentley – ‘All the best mate 💪🏼’

Mario Lemina – ‘Come on laaaa !!! 🔥’

Birmingham are looking for a big season after gaining promotion back to the Championship, and the acquisition of Doyle on loan is solid business from them.

Doyle already has 52 appearances in the competition under his belt, and will relish the opportunity to remind people what he’s all about.

A fresh start for Doyle after underwhelming Wolves stint

It is the right call from Wolves to let Doyle leave on loan. Doyle had plenty of interest leading into the summer, so it was inevitable that he would leave on some basis.

Seemingly there is no buy option for Birmingham, so Wolves will now see how he gets on and presumably, talks will be had next year about the next steps.

It was clear that Pereira didn’t really fancy him.

But he is a still a great player and he is a coup for Birmingham as they seek to build after their promotion.

His experience of the Championship will stand him in great stead, and hopefully Doyle can enjoy a solid campaign.
