Liverpool star Diogo Jota has passed away following a traffic accident in Spain, according to reports in the country.

Spanish outlet Marca report the Portuguese forward, 28, was travelling with his brother, Andre, near the Zamora region of Sanabria when the accident occurred. Witnesses at the scene of the incident report the car was engulfed in flames after leaving the road.

Emergency services in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash. "The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident, and the vehicle was on fire," a statement read.

"1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.

"From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene."

Jota, who signed for Liverpool in 2020, was enjoying the final days of his summer break before returning to Merseyside to start pre-season. The tragic news comes just days after the forward married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Porto on June 22.

In a social media post, the couple said: “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.” The pair have been together since 2012 and were engaged for three years before their Portuguese ceremony last month.

Jota recently lifted the Nations League trophy with Portugal, rounding off an incredible season. His international success followed Arne Slot's side lifting the Premier League trophy at a canter.

Jota has been one of the standout Premier League stars in recent years, flourishing at Wolverhampton Wanderers before making the £45m Liverpool switch five years ago. Since then, he has made 120 appearances for the Reds.
