Diogo Jota death: Liverpool footballer dies in car crash aged 28

The Liverpool football Diogo Jota and his brother have been killed in a traffic accident, according to Spanish media.

The Portuguese player, aged 28, died in a car accident in the Spanish city of Zamora in northwestern Spain, according to Spanish news agency EFE.

According to Spanish media, Jota and his brother Andre were involved in a crash on the Rias Bajas Highway (A-52) near Palacios de Sanabria, early on Thursday morning, when a car left the road and caught fire.

Jota, who married just 10 days ago and has three children, won the Premier League with Liverpool last season and also won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal last month. He had joined Liverpool in 2020 after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £40m.

Jota's last post to Instagram

The footballer's last post to Instagram captured his wedding celebrations that took place a fortnight ago.

Jota shared the video yesterday of him and his new wife, Rute Cardoso surrounded by friends and family.

The video is captioned 'a day we will never forget.'

What we know so far

According to local Spanish media reports, Diogo and his 26-year-old brother, André Silva, died in a car accident in Zamora in north-western Spain on Thursday morning.

The Portuguese brothers died in a Lamborghini around 12.40, according to EFE.

Police sources told EFE that the car may have suffered a tre blowout while overtaking a car, causing it to leave the road and catch fire.

Spanish police — the Guardia Civil — are currently investigating.

Crash is two weeks after Jota got married

Jota's death comes just two weeks after he married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, at the end of June.

They had been in a relationship since 2012 before Jota proposed in July 2022.

The couple had three children together, two sons named Dinis and Oscar, and a daughter, named Rute.

We're bringing you some sad news this morning. Liverpool FC left winger Diogo Jota has been killed in a car crash, according to local reports in Spain.

The 28-year-old Portuguese forward died in a crash near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, according to the Spanish news agency EFE.

The Liverpool player had spent five years at the club after he was signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 for £41 million.
