'I think': Nemanja Vidic gives honest verdict on whether Virgil van Dijk is the best centre-back around

Virgil van Dijk has become a Liverpool legend since joining the club back in 2017.

Many expected the transfer of the Dutchman to be a flop when the Reds splashed £70million on the centre-back.

However, that couldn’t have been further from the truth with Van Dijk now regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the world.

No matter who his partner is in a back four, the 33-year-old always manages to build them up and help them perform to the highest standard.

And, while Liverpool fans may adore him, the fans of their rivals certainly do not.

Nemanja Vidic believes Virgil van Dijk is the best centre-back in the world

Every club in the Premier League would take Van Dijk in a heartbeat, because the defender is calm and collected on the ball and has rarely put a foot wrong.

And, while speaking to Gary Neville during an interview with The Overlap, Nemanja Vidic gave his thoughts on the centre-back.

“I think Van Dijk [is the best centre-back in the world] because he’s going consistently well for many years,” he said.

Virgil van Dijk has two years left to cement himself in the Premier League’s history books

Now that Van Dijk has chosen to extend his Liverpool stay by a further two years, the centre-back has a chance to forever cement himself in the Premier League’s history books.

The former Southampton man was the first Dutch captain to lead his team to a Premier League title, and if he can get another one or two wins under his belt, he’d forever be hailed as one of the greats.

Liverpool will also be looking to do better in the Champions League this time around, especially with all the new arrivals they’ve managed to bring in.

At the moment, Slot’s priorities seem to be a new centre-back and striker, with the centre-back likely to be a long-term replacement for Van Dijk, that is, as long as Ibrahima Konate doesn’t leave this year, of course.

At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what Liverpool’s team will look like, but for now, they need to soak in every minute of having Van Dijk among their ranks, as it’s unlikely that there will be another like him anytime soon.
