Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has paid tribute to Diogo Jota after the Liverpool striker died in a car crash. The 28-year-old is said to have been travelling with his brother, Andre Silva, in the Zamora region of Sanabria when the incident occurred.

According to the Zamora provincial council, firefighters attended the scene on the A52, known as the Palacios de Sanabria, after the vehicle caught fire. Zamora News report that emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 1am on Thursday morning, with the vehicle heading towards nearby Benavente.

Tributes have flooded in from the world of football and beyond for the Portugal international. Sharing a black and white photo of Jota to Instagram, Carragher wrote: "Absolutely heartbroken by the sad news about Diogo Jota", alongside a heartbreak emoji.

He added: "Thoughts are with his wife Rute and their three kids." PDC darts player Stephen Bunting posted: "Such sad news I’m hearing. RIP Diogo Jota. What a lovely person.

"Such a sad day for the football world and beyond. Only just married too. My heart goes out to the family and we are all sending our prayers."

Manchester United's Gary Neville wrote: "That is heartbreaking news on Diogo Jota and his brother. All my love and best wishes to his family."

Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano said: "Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother have both passed away due to traffic accident, reports Marca. Deepest condolences, support, and thoughts are with those involved, his family and loved ones."

The Spanish civil guard confirmed to The Associated Press that Jota and his brother were found dead after their car went off a road near the western city of Zamora. Police were investigating the causes. They said there were no other vehicles involved.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and won three major trophies with the Merseyside club — including the Premier League title last season. Jota’s death comes weeks after he married Rute Cardoso and in a social media post wrote, “Yes to forever.”

The footballer leaves behind his wife Rute Cardoso, and three children: Dinis, Duarte, and a daughter born in 2024. The accident also claimed the life of his brother, Andre Silva.
