Alan Shearer and Sandro Tonali lead Diogo Jota tributes after Liverpool star dies in car crash

The footballing world has been shocked by the dreadful news of the Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota's passing

Tributes are flooding in for Liverpool forward Diogo Jota after the 28-year-old died in a car crash in Spain in the early hours of this morning.

The Portugal international and his brother Andre were killed in Zamora region of Sanabria when their car left the road.

The world of football has been rocked by the dreadful news, with so many involved in the game expressing their disbelief and sending condolences to Jota's family.

He had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Porto on June 22 and had recently shared pictures of the couple's happy day on social media.

Liverpool FC released a statement this morning which read: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

"We will continue to provide them with our full support."

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer led the tributes, simply posting 'Heartbreaking' with a broken heart emoji.

United's Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali also took to social media, posting a praying emoji above a picture of the Liverpool star.

Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben posted: "This is heartbreaking. My thoughts to his family and everyone connected to him at Liverpool FC."

And Newcastle United released a statement this morning which read: "We are deeply saddened to learn the heartbreaking news of Diogo Jota's passing.

"Our heartfelt condolences are with Diogo’s young family, friends and everyone at Liverpool Football Club during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace, Diogo."

Former United goalkeeper Shay Given added: "Terrible news, thoughts and prayers with his family and friends, so sad."

And ex-Newcastle striker Mick Quinn - Liverpool born and with strong connections to Merseyside - posted: "So shocked and sad to hear of the Death of Diego Jota only 28 R.I.P #YNWA," referencing Liverpool's famous 'You'll Never Walk Alone' anthem.
