Liverpool confirms death of Diogo Jota in heartbreaking statement

Liverpool has posted a heartfelt tribute to striker Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in Spain on Thursday.

The 28-year-old, who tragically married his partner Rute Cardoso two weeks ago, was involved in a car incident, which resulted in the death of the Liverpool player and his brother, Andre.

The news was confirmed by Spanish police, and Liverpool issued a statement a few hours later.

"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," the club said.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

"We will continue to provide them with our full support."

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanders and played 182 times, scoring 65 goals. He was part of the squad that won the Premier League title last season and also won the FA Cup and two Carabao Cup trophies.

A Portuguese international, Jota earned 49 caps and was played in the final of the Nations League last month.

Tributes have come pouring since Jota's passing, including from Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Manchester United and Everton.

"Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning. Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids," Carragher wrote on X.

Former players Ian Rush, John Aldridge have also paid tribute to Jota, who also played for Porto and Pacos Ferreira during his career.
