The Premier League has released a statement following the tragic passing of Liverpool star Diogo Jota in a fatal car crash in Spain.
The 28-year-old, alongside his younger brother Andre Silva, 25, died after the tire on the vehicle, a Lamborghini, blew out during an overtake, forcing it off the road in the province of Zamora. Spanish police confirmed that the car also caught on fire. Jota's passing comes after another successful season at Anfield, which saw him help the Reds lift the Premier League trophy in May.
He then went on international duty with Portugal and helped his country win the Nations League, before the father of three tied the knot with long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, late last month. "Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre," the Premier League said.
"Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo's family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time. Football has lost a champion who will be forever missed. We will continue to support our friends and colleagues at the club."
Tributes have poured in, with Liverpool also releasing a statement on the player's passing. Jota joined the Reds from Wolves in 2020 and scored 65 goals, winning a Premier League, an FA Cup, and two League Cups.
"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," the club said. "The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
