Diogo Jota tributes as Leeds United send support to Liverpool after star dies aged 28

Leeds United Football Club have joined a flood of tributes for Liverpool forward Diogo Jota after the 28-year-old died in a car crash in Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning. The Portugal international and his brother Andre were killed in Zamora region of Sanabria when their car left the road.

The world of football has been rocked by the dreadful news, with so many involved in the game expressing their disbelief and sending condolences to Jota's family. Jota had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Porto on June 22 and had recently shared pictures of the couple's happy day on social media.

Liverpool FC released a statement this morning which read: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support."

Leeds United were quick to send their message of condolence, writing on social media: "The thoughts of everyone at #LUFC are with Diogo Jota’s family, friends and all associated with @LFC at this devastating time," with the message accompanied by a white love heart.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was one of the first ex-players to post a message of condolence, saying: "Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning. Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids."

Ex-Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler added: "RIP Diogo. Heartbreaking news , thoughts and prayers with all his family . Absolutely devastated for his wife and 3 beautiful children."
