Liverpool attacker Diogo Jota has been killed in a car crash whilst on holiday in the Spanish province of Zamora.

Everybody around the footballing world was devastated to hear that Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota passed away in a car crash during the early hours of Thursday morning in Spain.

The tragic news comes less than two weeks after Jota married his long-term partner, with whom he had three children. Liverpool were quick to respond with a statement on their official website. It reads: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Following the incident, clubs and players across the footballing world have sent out messages of support and condolences to everyone affected by Jota’s tragic death.

Manchester City “shocked and saddened” by Jota’s passing

Following the news on Thursday morning, Manchester City posted on X with a response to Jota’s death. They posted a heartfelt image of Jota arm in arm with City captain Bernardo Silva, as the pair have played together for several years in the Portuguese national team.

City’s statement said: “Everyone at Manchester City is shocked and saddened to learn about the devastating news regarding the passing of Diogo Jota. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and everyone at Liverpool Football Club at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Diogo.”

Jota plays alongside three Man City players with the Portuguese national team: Silva, Ruben Dias, and Matheus Nunes, all three of whom will have been hit hard by the tragic news. Furthermore, City’s summer signing Rayan Ait-Nouri also played alongside Jota for a season during his time with Wolves, before his move to Liverpool.

The Portuguese striker scored over 130 goals in a career that saw him make nearly 400 appearances for Pacos de Ferreira, Porto, Wolves and Liverpool. He has also won a Premier League title, an FA Cup and two League Cups with Liverpool, and two Nations League titles with Portugal.
