Former Liverpool star and pundit Jamie Carragher has shared an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota after it was announced that the 28-year-old player had died in a car crash.

In the early hours of this morning, Jota was involved in a car crash along with his brother, Andre Felipe, in Zamora, Spain. The Lamborghini that the brothers were driving left the road due to a tyre blow out, Spanish authorities said - just two weeks after Jota’s wedding day.

Carragher, who made 737 appearances for Liverpool over 17 years, shared a message over Jota’s death shortly after the announcement. He posted a photograph of the player on Instagram along with the message: “Absolutely devastated by the sad news about Diogo Jota.”

He included a broken heart emoji and added: “Thoughts are with his wife Rute & their three kids.”

Jota married his long-term partner Rute Cardodo on June 22nd, and the pair shared three children together: two sons, born in 2021 and 2023, and a daughter, born in 2024.
