Colombia side release former Manchester United striker

Manchester United are gearing up for what could be one of the most critical transfer windows in the club’s recent history, with Ruben Amorim overseeing a major rebuild after a nightmare 2024/25 campaign.

With no Champions League football and a 15th-place Premier League finish fresh in memory, there is no hiding from the fact that changes are needed both in personnel and performance.

The Europa League final defeat only added salt to the wounds, and Amorim knows he must assemble a squad capable of returning United to Europe — or face serious pressure.

The club have already landed Matheus Cunha in a £62.5m deal from Wolves to bolster the attacking department, but that’s unlikely to be the end of United’s business.

A second bid for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has been accepted as CentreDevils exclusively revealed, and question marks continue to hang over Rasmus Hojlund’s future following a frustrating second season at Old Trafford, where he scored just 10 goals in 52 games.

As the club consider more attacking reinforcements, another striker with ties to Old Trafford is back on the market — though this one is far from a solution for Amorim’s plans.

Colombian forward Radamel Falcao has officially become a free agent after deciding not to continue at Millonarios FC, the club confirmed.

“The dream of everyone and the Tiger’s dream came true.

“Thank you, Radamel, for wearing our colors and giving everything for our badge.

“Thank you for allowing our history to have another chapter of glory, where the greatest legend of Colombian football was part of our institution,” wrote the ‘Embajador’ in their statement.

Radamel Falcao, now 38, was emotional as he left the club of his heart, just one year after joining the side he supported as a child.

His departure follows Millonarios’ elimination in the Liga BetPlay DIMAYOR 2025-I semi-finals, and while the decision to part ways was expected, it’s notable that the former United man remains intent on continuing his career.

Falcao made 28 appearances during his year in Colombia, scoring 11 goals — an impressive return considering his age and role in the squad.

Of course, United fans will remember his short-lived loan spell in Manchester during the 2014/15 season, where the Colombian was still recovering from a serious knee injury and never truly hit form, scoring just four goals under Louis van Gaal.

Despite never fulfilling expectations at Old Trafford, Falcao’s name remains iconic in global football circles.

While there’s no chance United would move for him now — even with Amorim seeking a striker — it’s a reminder of how far the club’s approach has shifted under INEOS.

The focus now must remain on players in their prime, with the physicality, hunger and top-level experience required to lead the line — something Falcao, a decade ago, may well have offered.
