Diogo Jota: 1996-2025

We are devastated to learn about the passing of Liverpool and Portugal footballer Diogo Jota, following a tragic car accident on Thursday 3 July 2025 alongside his younger brother Andre Silva, also a footballer.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Diogo's family, friends and team-mates at Liverpool and Portugal.

With over 300 appearances and 109 goals with English clubs Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as winning title honours in the Emirates FA Cup, Premier League, EFL Cup and EFL Championship, Jota was a popular figure throughout his eight years in England.

Diogo Jota's final appearance saw him help Portugal win the UEFA Nations League Final in July 2025

Born in Porto on 4 December 1996, Jota began his career in his homeland with Pacos de Ferreira, where he came through the youth ranks and made his senior team debut at the age of 17 in October 2014.

Later that season, he registered his first goals for the club in May 2015, to become the youngest player to score for the club in the Portuguese top flight.

A move across the border into Spain followed in the summer of 2016, when Atletico Madrid signed him before he made a loan switch back to his hometown club, FC Porto, a few weeks later and went on to enjoy a successful season there.

His first taste of English football followed in the 2017-18 campaign, after joining Wolverhampton Wanderers on an initial season-long loan. After helping Wolves seal promotion to the Premier League by scoring 17 goals en-route to the EFL Championship title that season, he signed at Molineux on a permanent deal in July 2018.

The following campaign saw Jota catch the eye in the English top flight, as he helped them to a seventh-place finish and secure Europa League qualification, while also reaching the Emirates FA Cup semi-final at Wembley where they lost to Watford.

He continued to impress in the 2019-20 season, helping Wolves to the Europa League quarter-final stage, before scoring what proved to be his 44th and final goal following 131 appearances for the Midlands club in July 2020.

Jota first arrived in English football in 2017, when he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers

Earlier that campaign, he also became only the second Portuguese player after Cristiano Ronaldo to score a hat-trick in the Premier League, following his treble against Leicester City in January 2019.

A move to Liverpool came in September 2020, and he quickly became a key player in Jurgen Klopp’s team with a goal on his Premier League debut against Arsenal at Anfield.

He also had the honour of adding his name in Liverpool’s history books by scoring the club’s 10,000th goal, which came in a UEFA Champions League match against Midtjylland.

It was in the 2021-22 season when Jota’s Liverpool career really peaked with a domestic double, as he helped the Merseyside club to win the Premier League and the Emirates FA Cup titles, with Jota playing a role as a substitute in their penalty shootout win over Chelsea at Wembley in May 2022.

They also reached the UEFA Champions League Final that season, but suffered defeat to Real Madrid in the Final.

The 2024-25 season saw Liverpool win the Premier League title under Arne Slot, with Jota ending the season with a total of 182 appearances for the Reds, after scoring 65 goals and winning four major honours with the club.

On the international front, having represented Portugal at MU19 and MU21 level, he progressed into the senior ranks and was a member of the squad which won the inaugural UEFA Nations League Finals on home soil in 2019 before also playing in the UEFA EURO 2020 tournament in England in the summer of 2021.

His final appearance for Portugal and in football came when he was part of the team which won the 2025 UEFA Nations League title with victory over Spain in Germany.

Jota was introduced as an extra-time substitute, his 49th cap, as the game ended 2-2 before Portugal’s 5-4 penalty shootout win in Munich.
