Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has sent a heartfelt message to the family and friends of Diogo Jota after the death of the Portugal forward at the age of 28.
"RIP Diogo," Gerrard wrote on his Instagram story following the news breaking, alongside a greyscale picture of Jota that had been posted by the official Liverpool FC account. "Condolences to his family and friends during this incredibly sad time," Gerrard said.
"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," the club said in a statement this morning. "The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
"We will continue to provide them with our full support."
"Our deepest condolences are with the loved ones of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre, and everyone connected with Liverpool FC following today’s heartbreaking news," a Manchester United post on social media read.

"We are devastated by this tragic news," Everton added. "Everyone at Everton is sending their thoughts and condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and Andre Silva."
"Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning," Jamie Carragher said. "Thoughts are with everyone of their family and friends, especially his wife Rute and their three lovely kids."
Jota's former clubs said they were heartbroken, with FC Porto first to the news. "FC Porto is in mourning," it said. "It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks. Rest in peace."

Atletico Madrid said: "Atletico de Madrid is shocked by the tragic news of the passing of Diogo Jota, former club player, and his brother Andre. We send our deepest condolences to their family and loved ones. Rest in peace."
And Wolves posted: "We are heartbroken. Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves. The memories he created will never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre. You will be truly missed, and always remembered."
Other clubs from around the Premier League also sent messages. Bournemouth's official account posted: "Such sad news. Everyone at AFC Bournemouth sends their heartfelt condolences to Diogo's family, friends and all of your staff."
Newcastle's added: "We are deeply saddened to learn the heartbreaking news of Diogo Jota's passing. Our heartfelt condolences are with Diogo’s young family, friends and everyone at Liverpool Football Club during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace, Diogo."
