UEFA confirms gesture to Portuguese FA after Diogo Jota tragic death at 28

UEFA has announced that a moment of silence will be observed at all of the Women's European Championship matches on Thursday and Friday to pay tribute to Diogo Jota.

Liverpool forward Jota passed away alongside his brother in the early hours of Thursday morning, after the car they were traveling in blew a tyre, causing a crash which resulted in the vehicle catching fire.

A UEFA statement said: “UEFA announces that a moment of silence will be observed at all of today’s and tomorrow’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva who tragically passed away today."

Portugal is due to face Spain in both teams' opening game of the tournament in Bern on Thursday, and Portugal's players are expected to wear black armbands during the fixture.

Jota, who married his long-term partner less than a fortnight ago, was traveling with brother Andre Silva in northern Spain when the tragic crash occurred.

A Spanish police statement issued on Thursday morning confirmed Jota's passing. It said: "The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.

"It was in the early hours, 00:30 BST, in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. The car caught on fire, and the two occupants were killed."

Liverpool Football Club released a short statement on Jota's passing. "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," the statement said.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support."
