Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo was left heartbroken, saying "It doesn't make sense" as he paid an emotional tribute to teammate Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away on Thursday. The 28-year-old Liverpool star died alongside his brother in a car crash in Spain’s northern province of Zamora, after their vehicle veered off a motorway and burst into flames.

Taking to social media, Ronaldo penned an emotional tribute to Jota, where he shared a black and white picture of his Portugal teammate. "It doesn't make sense," he wrote.

"Just now we were together in the national team, just now you got married. To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in Peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you."

The news of Jota's tragic death sent shockwaves through the football world. Liverpool, where the forward spent five years, which included a Premier League-winning campaign last season, released a heartbreaking statement saying the club had been "devastated by the news.

"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," the club said in a statement. "The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support."

Liverpool fans, too, quickly paid tribute to the football star, laying down scarves, wreaths, and flowers as they arrived in large numbers at Anfield.

Jota is survived by his partner, Rute Cardoso, whom he married on June 22, and their three children.
