Diogo Jota has tragically died just over one week after the Liverpool star got married. He wedded Rute Cardoso only a matter of days ago after having been engaged for the last three years.

In the early hours of Thursday morning in the Spanish province of Zamora, emergency services were called to the scene with local media reporting a car had lost control and burst into flames. The identify of the two occupants was later confirmed to be Jota and his brother Andre.

In England, news of his passing filtered through at roughly 9:30am with Liverpool then releasing a statement just under one hour later.

"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota," the statement began on the club's website.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

"Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

"We will continue to provide them with our full support."

Tributes from the majority of Premier League clubs have flown in with the Portugal FA and former clubs Wolves and Pacos de Ferreira also issuing heartfelt statements.

Former Liverpool players and teammates of Jota including Jamie Carragher, Ruben Neves and Raul Jimenez have also posted emotional messages. Current Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic has also sent a message.

Following his success in the Nations League with Portugal, Jota spent his time off with family which also saw him get married on Sunday, June 22. In the latter stages of that month, he confirmed that in an Instagram post with the caption stating, "June 22, 2025. Yes to forever [Infinity emoji]."

That post was made public five days ago with Jota and his new wife Rute collaborating on a post which showed the behind scenes of their wedding in a video which lasted 75 seconds. Alongside clips from the special day, a voice is narrating the footage. It says: "Dear Rute, dear Diogo. This is a day that will mark your lives for the rest of your days.
