The soccer community is in mourning on Thursday following the shocking passing of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota. Jota, who also starred for his native Portugal, recently helped the country win the UEFA Nations League, was just 28 years old.
Liverpool Football Club announced news of Jota’s death, along with his brother Andre, on Thursday morning following a vehicle accident. It didn’t take long for tributes to begin pouring in from across the soccer world for the Portuguese player.
“Doesn’t make any sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you were married,” Cristiano Ronaldo posted on Instagram. “To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre, we will all miss you.”
Liverpool legend and current TV analyst Jamie Carragher also took to social media to share his condolences.
“Devastating news about Diogo Jota & his brother Andre this morning,” Carrager posted on X. Thoughts are with everyone of their family & friends, especially his wife Rute & their three lovely kids 💔.”
In fact, all across X, tributes rolled in as fans, friends, and former players shared their memories of Jota and their condolences for his family. Liverpool fans were also quick to honor the player, leaving flowers and various tributes outside of the Anfield Stadium.

Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Jota and his brother were driving in the Liverpool player’s vehicle when a tire blew out, sending the car off the road at high speed.
Jota married his wife Rute Cardoso, just 10 days prior to the vehicle accident that took his life. The couple have three children together.
