One of the best and most popular chants sung around Anfield over recent years was for Diogo Jota. The Liverpool forward, who has died in a car accident in Spain, quickly became a fan favourite after joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020.

He began his professional career with Pacos de Ferreira before joining Atletico Madrid in 2016. He spent the 2016-17 season on loan at Porto, where his brother Andre Silva, who also died in the crash, was a youth player. Jota signed for Liverpool in a £45m deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2020.

When Jota signed, Klopp said: "He is a player who gives us so many options to use. He's 23 years old, still far away from being kind of a finished article - he has so much potential."

He enjoyed his best goalscoring return at Liverpool with 21 goals in 55 games in 2021-22. He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds, helping them win the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 and the Premier League title last season, despite being injured for a lot of last season.

Jota and his brother tragically died in a car crash in Spain after a Lamborghini he was travelling in came off the road and burst into flames following a suspected tyre blowout. The crash happened on the A-52 in Palacios de Sanabria near the city of Zamora at 12.40am on Thursday.

According to the Zamora provincial council, firefighters attended the scene on the A52, known as the Palacios de Sanabria, after the vehicle caught fire.

The Jota chant came about when the striker was in top form, netting against Arsenal twice in 2-1 victory at Arsenal in 2022 to help the club into the Carabao Cup final.

The new song which took off in the away end at the Emirates in 2022 has remained as one of the Kop's favourite chants. The lad from Portugal heard his name sung on numerous occasions.

The song references Jota's Liverpool shirt number and style of play, making a comparison with legendary Portugal star Luis Figo. Figo had many incredible achievements, including winning the Ballon d'Or in 2000. He was the second Portuguese player to win the award, following Eusébio.

What are the lyrics to the Diogo Jota chant?

The song is sung to the tune of a famous chant from River Plate fans in Argentina:

Oh, he wears the number 20,He will take us to victory,And when he’s running down the left wing,He’ll cut inside and score for LFC.He’s a lad from Portugal,Better than Figo don’t you know,Oh, his name is Diogo!

Jota heard his song chanted for the final time at Anfield when the Premier League celebrations took place in May. After the game, the Kop saluted all the players one by one, with each getting their own chant sung by the supporters.

Liverpool's number 20 walked towards fans as soon as his famous song erupted. He waved a scarf around his head as he bounced to the tune with the adoring fans.

Jamie Webster recorded his own acoustic version of the popular song at Melwood Training Centre in West Derby last year. The tragic death comes just over a month after Jota made a special video appearance at Webster's BOSS KIDS show at the M&S Bank Arena on May 25, celebrating the final weekend of the 24/25 Premier League season.

Introducing Jota to the audience of young Liverpool FC fans, Webster said: "One of the players who plays for Liverpool has got a special message for us. If you look at this screen behind me for a second, he might have something to tell you."

Jota said: "Hello everyone at BOSS KIDS. I heard my song was the most voted for the best song of all of the players. I personally agree with that. So perhaps Jamie can sing it for you guys and you can sing extra loud. We are champions."

Flowers and messages of tribute to Diogo Jota have been laid at Anfield after the Liverpool FC player died in a car accident. Flowers. One message quoted the club's chant for the forward, saying: "Ooooh he wears the number 20. RIP Diogo YNWA. Forever Red."

Another said: "Such sad news. You will forever be our number 20. RIP Diogo and Andre. YNWA. Forever loved x."
