Arsenal pay tribute as football mourns death of Diogo Jota and brother in tragic accident

Arsenal have joined the football world in mourning the tragic death of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who has passed away at the age of 28. Jota and his 26-year-old brother, André Silva, both lost their lives in a road traffic accident in Spain during the early hours of Thursday morning.

Spanish authorities confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 12:30am, with both brothers pronounced dead at the scene. The devastating news comes just weeks after Jota married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso. The couple have three children.

Arsenal shared a heartfelt message on their official X account, writing: “The thoughts of everyone at Arsenal are with Diogo’s family, friends and all associated with Liverpool Football Club. Rest in peace, Diogo.”

Liverpool FC also released an official statement, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of their player: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota. The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Tributes have poured in from across the football world, with Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo among those paying tribute.In a deeply emotional post, Ronaldo wrote: “It doesn’t make sense. Just now we were together in the national team, just now you had got married. To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you’ll always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We’ll all miss you.”

UEFA have confirmed that a minute’s silence will be held at all UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 qualifiers today and tomorrow, including the match between Spain and Portugal, in memory of the two brothers.

“UEFA announces that a moment of silence will be observed at all of today’s and tomorrow’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 matches in memory of Portugal international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva who tragically passed away today,” read the statement.

In Liverpool, tributes have already begun to appear around Anfield. Supporters have laid flowers and wreaths, while handwritten messages and Portuguese flags have been left in remembrance of Jota. A flag outside the stadium has been lowered to half-mast in a solemn mark of respect.
