Liverpool forward and Portuguese international Diogo Jota has passed away after being involved in a road accident in Spain.

Jota, who was driving a Lamborghini alongside his brother André, lost control of the vehicle when a tyre burst while overtaking another car, causing it to veer off the road and crash in a fiery explosion.

The Spanish Guardia Civil confirmed the tragedy, revealing that the accident happened on Wednesday at 23:30.

“It was in the early hours, 00:30 local time (23:30 BST), in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora. The car caught on fire, and the two occupants were killed.”

Portuguese Football Federation head Pedro Proenca expressed his condolences and requested a minute of silence before their next game in the women’s European Championship in honor of the two football stars.

“On my behalf, and behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and Andre Silva, as well as Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where, respectively, they played their football.

“The Portuguese Football Federation has already asked UEFA for a minute’s silence, this Thursday, before the match of our national team with Spain, in the women’s European Championship,” he stated.
